General Introduction
The International Perspectives Webinar Series brings together distinguished experts and scholars from ASEAN and beyond to exchange insights on emerging ideas, critical perspectives, and innovative practices across disciplines. This edition explores “Creative Economy of Tourism: Challenges to Maldivian Women Entrepreneurs”. While the expanding creative and cultural tourism sectors present vital opportunities for economic diversification, local empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods across the Maldives, women entrepreneurs face distinct structural barriers, limited market access, and socio-cultural constraints. This webinar invites participants to examine the systemic challenges women encounter within the tourism value chain and discuss how policy,
finance, and community networks can foster a more inclusive creative ecosystem. Through keynote presentations, case studies, and interactive discussions, the session encourages cross-disciplinary dialogue and critical reflection on the intersection of gender, cultural heritage, entrepreneurship, and sustainable tourism. Participants will explore the practical bottlenecks facing women-led creative ventures—including access to capital, digital tools, supply chains, and training—while evaluating policy frameworks and grassroots strategies that enable Maldivian women to lead, innovate, and thrive within the tourism economy.
